CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On October 18, 2006, The West Boulevard Public Library was honored by Fannie Mae for its role in creating a national online searchable database for affordable housing.
In September 1998, the West Boulevard Public Library hosted a public meeting for U.S. Representative Sue Myrick's Task Force on Housing. In this meeting, Van Gottel – then a social worker for Community Link and now the CEO and Founder of Socialserve.com – met local Fannie Mae office representative Jon Gauthier. Gauthier and Gottel held a series of follow-up meetings that led to the initial funding of Socialserve.com by Fannie Mae, Bank of America, the City of Charlotte and the City of Gastonia.
Today, Socialserve.com provides the number one affordable housing listing and locating service in the country and an array of related technology solutions to over 100 million Americans in 16 states. The Charlotte-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit currently employs around 30 people, including a staff of trained (and often bilingual) call center professionals. In spring 2006, Socialserve.com achieved finalist status in the inaugural nonprofit category for the prestigious Blue Diamond Award presented by Information Technology Charlotte in conjunction with the Charlotte Chamber. Socialserve.com has also won awards in New Jersey, South Carolina and Houston, Texas, for the service it provides. The company continues to grow, with plans for expansion of its technology offerings and call center service. And since September, Socialserve.com has inked new contracts with the State of Louisiana; the State of North Carolina; Medina County, Ohio; Miami-Dade County, Fla., Pima County/Tucson, Ariz.; and Los Angeles County, Calif.
